Beloved, it’s been a minute since I’ve blogged and I do apologize for the delay. But my recent trip to a Secrets Resort in Nayarit needs to be discussed. So here we go.
My darling fiancé and I were invited by his friend to attend their vow renewal. My fiancé mentioned that the resort was brand new, so I wanted to research it beforehand to see if it was worth upgrading a room, or even cabana service. (It’s the travel agent in me)
My go to review channels are Google and TripAdvisor because travelers upload their photos there and give you the 411. Right off the bat, I knew we were doomed according to Google.
After seeing the poor score of 3.8 I had to dive in more. I wanted to be sure that the low score wasn’t given from entitled brat travelers that didn’t get their way during vacation. Here are the things that were most mentioned that stuck out to me: food quality, alcohol, the language barrier and the overall building of the resort.
Arrival
When we arrived at the resort I noticed that the resort was planted in the middle of nowhere. Which was ok for me, but for those who like to get off of the resort and wander, this was not the place for them. When we pulled into the resort, I actually liked the design of the resort and it’s layout. We gave our bags to the concierge and headed upstairs to check in. What I did not like is that they immediately pass you off to be pitched to for a membership even though we were only on the grounds for about 15 minutes. We didn’t even have the opportunity to look around the resort, taste the food or even look in our room! (Warning #1)
After we declined several times and finally was let go, we headed to our room and this is where the disappointment started… (Warning #2)
The closet rail was falling off
There was no handle to close the shower door just a square nob
There was a weird odor coming from the wall where the bathroom toilet was
There was a weird hole in the ceiling next to the bathroom door ceiling track
The plate for the shower temperature was put on backwards, so the cold water was the hot water and the hot water was the cold water
The Food
Sigh, the food was ghetto. Yes, I repeat the food was absolutely horrible. The ice cream in the ice cream parlor was watered down. (How do you water down ice cream?) The alcohol was watered down (Says my fiancé). When we went to the steak house, they didn’t have any, so we had to wait for the meat to arrive from another restaurant on the property. Don’t waste your time at the hibachi spot, yes even the food at the hibachi restaurant was trash. (Please keep in mind you have to make reservations at the hibachi restaurant the morning of the day you would like to eat there.) (Warning #3)
The Overall Property
Let’s keep the disappointment train rolling shall we? Let’s talk about the adult side of the resort. So, if you didn’t know, the Secrets Bahia Mita Surf is a two sided property. One side for the adults and the other side for the family (Dreams Resort). Please note, many of the restaurants are on the family side. Which means you will see children on your vacation. There is an adults only pool, but you can still hear children at the family pool because the only thing separating you two are some shrubs. In addition, there is a very bad language barrier. When we ordered our food, on several occasions our waiter had to get someone over to the table to translate for them. Now don’t get me wrong, I totally believe in knowing a little of the language of the area but this was just ridiculous. (Warning #4)
The cabanas are not worth it, they are placed in front of trees blocking your view of the ocean. (Warning #5)
Lastly, if you look up at the ceiling of many of the eateries THERE IS WATER DRIPPING FROM THE CEILING! I repeat there is water dripping from the ceiling in many of the eateries. This was extremely concerning for me with this resort only being open for about 4 months. Look for random puddles of water around the eateries, then look up at the ceiling. (Warning 5)
Bottom line, this resort is not ready for vacationers, if you are a seasoned traveler please avoid this place by all means. You will be frustrated and stuck as there is nothing available around you for miles.
